Kevin Butler is a former American football player who was a placekicker in the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the Georgia Bulldogs, and then played in the NFL for the Chicago Bears (1985–1995) and the Arizona Cardinals (1996–1997). He is the first kicker ever inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
According to the NFL website, Butler had a career total of 265 field goals made, 361 field goals attempted, and a field goal percentage of 73.4. His longest field goal was 55 yards. He also scored 1,208 points in his NFL career.
Butler was a key member of the 1985 Chicago Bears team that won Super Bowl XX. He scored 12 points in the game, including a 46-yard field goal in the first quarter. He was also named to the PFWA All-Rookie Team and the Second-team All-Pro that year. He earned another Second-team All-Pro selection in 1989.
Butler is also known for his rivalry with former Green Bay Packers kicker Chester Marcol. In 1986, Butler kicked a game-winning field goal against the Packers after Marcol had missed a potential game-winner earlier. Butler then mocked Marcol by mimicking his trademark arm gesture. The two kickers exchanged insults and challenges in the media for several years.
Butler retired from the NFL in 1997 after playing one season with the Arizona Cardinals. He then returned to his alma mater, the University of Georgia, as a special teams assistant and a radio cohost. He is also involved in various charitable and business ventures. He is married and has three children
